BLUE GUM GALLERY HOSTS SECOND EMERGING ARTISTS 2006 EXHIBIT AND FILM FESTIVAL

Alternative Gallery to Showcase New and Site Specific Work by 2006 Award-Winning Emerging Artists and Friends

September 12, 2006 – The three Sonoma County visual artists who
received SonomaArts Emerging Artist awards in 2006 will be showcased in a second exhibit of new and site-specific work for one day only on October 7, 2006 from 10am to 10pm at the Blue Gum Gallery in Santa Rosa. Todd Barricklow, Seth Minor, and Catherine J. Richardson will share the huge space with selected fellow artists during the day, while the venue will segue into a film festival of emerging Sonoma County filmmakers during the evening hours.

The Emerging Artists 2006 program provided the first cash prize for individual emerging artists in the Sonoma County. It is sponsored by the Community Foundation and administered by the Arts Council of Sonoma County. Designed to help emerging artists continue making work by supporting more uninterrupted creative time, these $5,000 awards are based solely on artistic merit evidenced by previous work, and are not restricted to specific projects.

“The emerging artists that received the SonomaArts awards each excel at a different media and each has a very distinct style,” states Helen Gillespie, Arts Council Board Member, Co-coordinator of the SonomaArts Award, and owner of the Blue Gum Gallery. “This particular alternative art space provides a great showcase for their art that not only extends the first dynamite show that was hosted by the Arts Council, but provides the scope for large-scale site-specific work as well.”

Todd Barricklow creates cutting-edge ceramics called “ceramic sgraffito”. “Sociological questions fuel much of my work,” he says. “My characters sometimes resemble people that I come in contact with in my day to day dealings, yet others are strangers that I only catch a glimpse of. These beings occupy the scene and face objects and representations of our world.”

Seth Minor started as a photographer but soon began making films. Minor recalls when at Santa Rosa Junior College, he realized that “it was not so much the images I was interested in, but rather the things I was photographing. With this came the desire for transition from observation – inherent in photography – to participation: from looking to doing.”

Catherine J. Richardson is a painter and multimedia artist. Much of Richardson’s work centers on her life in the coastal wetlands of Sonoma County. “My senses map the space of this particular place and a certain stewardship results form the tracking of the events, history, species, climate, etc.”

These rising new stars in the art world will be joined at the Blue Gum Gallery by a select few of their fellow artists for a day-long celebration of visual arts.

“By providing more than one venue for these emerging artists to showcase their work, we’ll be able to show the diversity of their work as well as generate a lot of visibility for both the artists and the program,” Gillespie emphasizes. “This series of ‘fortunate’ events supports the program’s ultimate goal to unearth and encourage artists with the potential to have a significant impact on art in the future.”

A third exhibit of the Emerging Artist’s work will be hosted by the City of Santa Rosa’s Finley Center from December 11, 2006 to February 9, 2007.

SEA TO BE THEME OF COLLABORATIVE ART EXHIBIT

Provocative interpretations of the Sea presented by three of Northern California’s most prolific artists

Santa Rosa, CA, June 5, 2006 – Whether sitting on a sandy beach absorbing the last warm rays of a sunset or walking along a shore getting your feet wet in the crisp seawater, the sea provides a very personal sensual experience. The Arts League of Northern California Gallery at Hamilton Field will be the site for a provocative new art exhibit, “The Sea” that presents sculpture and paintings by Warren Arnold, Jocelyn Audette and Hanya Popova Parker from July 1 to July 30. A reception will be held at the Gallery on July 1 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

From sand dunes to sea creatures, from abstract to figurative, the work of this trio of artists is instilled with a range of interpretations from the sublime to introspective. While their diverse experiences and personalities influence their approaches to the media and the theme, it is the collaborative aspects that underlie the exhibit and give it a unique dynamic energy.

“I enjoy working in collaboration with other artists,” explains sculptor Warren Arnold. “It drives the creative process, and there’s more of a creative challenge when working together.” Arnold has been a driving force behind the collaborative Sculpture Jam festival held in Sebastopol, CA every October. “The power of the sea to change and alter forms, such as objects floating in on the tides, has awed and inspired me for decades.”

“This show is part of a continuing collaboration between the three of us,” adds painter Jocelyn Audette, who was Artist's Magazine’s Artist of the Month in July 2004. “Last year we focused on the ocean theme with our “Secret Beach” exhibit at the Blue Gum Gallery in Santa Rosa. Now, we’re refining our approaches to the ocean’s appeal, its mystique and allure. In particular, I love the places where the land meets the sea, the juxtaposition of sculptured rocks and smooth sand with crashing waves or calm waters, and my joyous struggle to capture the power of this place with paint.”

“We’re all drawn to both the collaborative process and to this particular theme,” muses painter Hanya Popova Parker who has studied with a number of renowned artists including Mark Perlman, Bob Nugent, Chester Arnold, and William Morehouse. “In a metaphorical sense, the sea is the edge of the world. It creates dreams of distant lands and civilizations, of things new and unknown, where a departure from one shore means the arrival at a new shore. Painting the sea plein air is a personal and physical immersion. As artists, we try to capture in our work this connection with nature and the essence of these experiences.”
Both Parker and Audette were accepted for inclusion in the October 2006 edition of "American Art Collector - West", a juried selection of contemporary art and craft that profiles 120 to 200 artists in the region.

Each artist’s work will provide different and unique perspectives on various aspects of the sea, from seascapes to figurative to abstract interpretations. Sites range from plein air paintings of Dillon Beach to sculptures inspired by the ocean swells that surge around Hawaii. The work will remain on display and for sale in the gallery for four weeks, from July 1 to July 30.

A reception will be held at the Arts League of Northern California Gallery, Hamilton Field, 500 Palm Drive, Novato, CA, on July 1 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
